Identifying Tree Nut Allergens

Even traces of nut can cause life-threatening allergic reactions for some people. Use this fact sheet to find out how "nut" may be listed on food labels and common foods and ingredients that contain nuts.

Tree nuts, or simply "nuts" are key allergens under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. Along with peanuts (which are not actually nuts, but legumes) milk, eggs, sesame seeds, fish, shellfish, soy, lupin and wheat, key allergens cause 90 percent of allergic reactions to food in Australia.  

Food businesses and food service workers are responsible for protecting their customers from food safety hazards, including allergens. Use this handy reference sheet to find out how "tree nut" could appear on ingredient labels and common foods and products that may contain it.
